Optimizing Nutrition Rehabilitation and Early Refeeding of the Severely Malnourished Patient

The presentation aims to provide information and education on safely refeeding severely malnourished patients, including those with low body weight, electrolyte imbalances, or other medical complications. It covers medical nutrition therapy and the use of enteral or parenteral nutrition and emphasizes the significance of the therapeutic relationship between a dietitian and their patient in an inpatient setting. Attendees will be able to discuss treatment strategies that promote nutritional rehabilitation and the practical application of behavioral strategies to support medical interventions while focusing on patient-centered care.
The target audience for this continuing education program is all dietitians, including hospital clinical inpatient dietitians, mental health providers and clinicians working with individuals with eating disorders and other mental health diagnoses, hospital physicians, nurses who have eating disorder experience. Materials are appropriate for learners with an introductory level of understanding about eating disorders and their treatment.
Educational Objectives:
- Employ and explain the refeeding process in an inpatient setting for a severely malnourished
- Discuss Medical Nutrition Therapy for various medical complications that can arise in a severely malnourished patient
- Explain the importance of nutrition related interventions to support behavioral changes in eating disorder treatment
